Hide yo’ wife! Hide yo’ kids! Is there anything that the fear-mongering global warming alarmists won’t say to further their cause? Um, no. From the stretching-credulity-to-the-point-of-absurdity department at Mother Jones comes a report on the latest doomsday prognostication:
“Looking at the past, we see a strong relationship between temperature and crime,” says study author Matthew Ranson, an economist with policy consulting firm Abt Associates. “We think that is likely to continue in the future.”
Just how much more crime can we expect? Using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s warming projections, Ranson calculated that from 2010 to 2099, climate change will “cause” an additional “22,000 murders, 180,000 cases of rape, 1.2 million aggravated assaults, 2.3 million simple assaults, 260,000 robberies, 1.3 million burglaries, 2.2 million cases of larceny, and 580,000 cases of vehicle theft” in the US.
Ranson acknowledges that those results represent a relatively small jump in the overall level of crime—a 2.2 percent increase in murder and a 3.1 percent increase in rape, for instance. Still, says John Roman, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute’s Justice Policy Center, those numbers add up to “a lot of victims” over the course of the century.

This is pretty amazing. Watch as snowflakes form their six-sided crystalline shapes, from a tiny spot to fully formed. (via Colossal, where there’s some explanation of why snowflakes have six sides)
George Orwell’s prescient look into the future continues to manifest itself here in the good ol’ US of A. Nice to know so many more people are going to get the opportunity to share the responsibility of this ill-conceived and poorly executed monstrosity.
Agency employs Orwellian term “Shared Responsibility Payment” to describe Obamacare individual mandate tax.
President Obama’s Internal Revenue Service today quietly released a series of Obamacare “Health Care Tax Tips” warning Americans that they must obtain “qualifying” health insurance – as defined by the federal government – or face a “shared responsibility payment” when filing their tax returns in 2015. The term “shared responsibility payment” refers to the Obamacare individual mandate tax, one of at least seven tax hikes in the healthcare law that directly hit families making less than $250,000 per year. Yes, that’s right – Modesto Junior College will now allow students to hand out copies of the U.S. Constitution in expanded areas on their campus. Previously, this activity (and other free-speech activities) were restricted to “free speech” zones. It’s hard to imagine that any university would have rules that limit free speech -a freedom enshrined in that dusty old document written by old guys somewhere back in history- and that a lawsuit would be required to reverse them. I’ve read other stories about restrictions like this on college campuses, so this isn’t the only one. Sheesh.
A college sued by a student prohibited from passing out copies of the Constitution expanded free speech protections and provided $50,000 to the wronged student as part of a settlement reached last night to end the lawsuit.
Robert Van Tuinen, who was banned from passing out copies of the Constitution last September, filed a lawsuit against Modesto Junior College in October. A videotape of Van Tuinen being told he needed a permit and could only hand out the copies in a small area set aside for free speech at the college sparked widespread criticism. Read More
Another example of mindless adherence to zero tolerance policies. Apparently, common sense is not a prerequisite for administrators in some school systems. Note the comment by the boy’s guardian about “guilty until proven innocent.” I wonder if these words actually came out of the principal’s mouth, or that was just her interpretation. The results sure make it look like you’re guilty first. This kid is facing criminal charges for this “offense.”
I also love the “random lockdown car search” thing – this is tantamount to the school’s administration saying “we’re going to assume everyone here is breaking some kind of rule, so we’re going to institute the occasional random search of your locker/car/person to see what rule you’re breaking.” Does the 4th Amendment to the Constitution no apply when you’re on school grounds?
A high school student in Montgomery County has been suspended after school officials found a knife inside his father’s car. David Duren-Sanner should be spending his time going through college and scholarship applications this time of year.Instead, he’s wondering if he’ll even be able to graduate after what hundreds of people are calling an overreaction to a mistake. On Thursday, Duren-Sanner, a senior at Northeast High School drove his father’s car to school. During a random lockdown, his car was chosen to be searched. Read More
