in-case-of-zombies-break-glassThis thing is just cool. A slingshot with a compass in the base, survival tools inside the handle, and the ability to shoot steel shot plus regular arrows. It also has the ability to be fitted with accessories like a light for night-time hunting, or zombie slaying. Here’s the description from their website:

This Survival Slingshot is configured for Archery as well as a tactical light for night time hunting. A Trophy Ridge Whisker Biscuit is mounted using our aluminum mounting bracket. Whisker biscuits increase accuracy with arrows but folds out of the way when you want to use regular slingshot ammunition. Read More

I’ve sat on stands (tree and ground) many times over the years, and the closest thing I’ve had to this was having a chipmunk sit on the same log as me in the George Washington National Forest. I’m not sure I could have resisted the urge to jump out of the tree.

I wrote a piece back in November about hunting season, and how it wasn’t going to be the same with my Dad not being around. I saw in my web analytics tool today where I got a referral link from the website of The Blue Ridge Bear and Coon Club.  I went out to take a look at the site, since I had not seen it before (it looks like a fairly recent creation). Anyway – I was browsing through some pictures that were posted there, and found this one, from the good ol’ days. I’m guessing, based on the haircut and lack of facial hair that this was circa 1975:

That’s me on the left, and my brother John washing dishes. Judging from the window, it was either very early, or after sundown. Looking pretty bleary-eyed; after a couple/four days without a shower, you started to get a little weary. Remembering back to those days, though, I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

I don’t spend as much time in the woods as I once did. If I were to plan a hunting or hiking trip now, I’d want to have one of these on hand. Survival essentials include:
